Hawthorne’s New York Pizza & Bar

We hit up Hawthorne’s New York Pizza & Bar after scoring the Groupon deal online. This wasn’t our first trip to Hawthorne’s New York Pizza & Bar but its the first time eating there for dinner instead of grabbing lunch to go. We had a special guest with us this afternoon.. his name is Charlie – the Pit Bull Puppy. His foster parents are out of town for the week so we volunteered to hang out with the little guy until they got back. Not wanting to leave the little guy at home… we took him to get some pizza with us.

Hawthorne’s New York Pizza & Bar has an outdoor dining area that allows dogs and with the unusually nice weather it made for the perfect dining experience. Capitalizing on our Groupon fortune, we decided to get a ton of food for the night. We started off with both the Garlic Cheese Bread and seven of Carlo’s Sweet Wings as our appetizer, Hawthorne’s Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza and Gorgonzola Pasta with Chicken for the entrees, then topped off the night with the fried cheesecake for dessert.

The Carlo’s Sweet Wings we’re unexpectedly delicious. We just went to the 2011 Carolina Wing Festival a couple weeks ago and ate at over a dozen local vendors representing Charlotte area restaurants.. we can honestly say that Hawthorne’s New York Pizza & Bar Carlo’s Sweet Wings are one of the best wings we have ever eaten.

The garlic cheese bread was a step-up from what we were expecting also. Not exactly your typical papa johns cheese bread.. this stuff was delicious!

So delicious in fact.. we felt bad not sharing the cheese bread love with Charlie.

He was loving every last bite.

Ella’s gorgonzola pasta with chicken was scrumptios! The sauce was super creamy and the gorgonzola cheeses added a great kick of flavor, and it was just as good for lunch the next day.

My Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza was really good, though not great. I would still have to recommend Fuel Pizza Cafe over Hawthorns for pizza.. though thats not to say anything bad about Hawthorns. The pizza was delicious and if you’re in the area, its an easy pick.

Charlie was enjoying Ellas dish as well.. judging from his enthusiasm we’re thinking he’s a fan of Italian food.

Despite us being full.. Charlie was still ready to finish off our plates for us :)

The fried cheesecake topped off our night but unfortunately not on a good note. It was a whopping $8 and not worth recommending. We have tried something similar at Azteca in Matthews and it was mind-blowingly addictive. Hawthorne’s fried cheesecake not so much.. the cheesecake consistency itself was just off. They definitely have the right intent and idea, but the end product needs some refinement.

We had a great time at Hawthorne’s New York Pizza & Bar and can easily recommend the place to anybody in the Elizabeth neighborhood looking to get some good Italian grub for dinner. Fresh ingredients, great food, a friendly staff and an outdoor seating area are always big wins in our book :)

Hawthorne’s New York Pizza & Bar

I ran by Hawthorn’s a couple days ago for lunch and loved it! I got two huge slices of cheese pizza made to perfection. The cheese was plentiful and the crust was almost as thin as it gets. It wasn’t the best pizza I had ever had, but it was good enough to recommend if you’re trolling around the Elizabeth neighborhood in search of pizza!

Intermezzo Pizzeria and Cafe

I jumped at the chance to try Intermezzo Pizzeria and Cafe when I found that they offered traditional Serbian cuisine. I’ve never tried Serbian food and love to experiment so off to Intermezzo I went. The decor was beautiful and the service was great. For my entree I opted for the Karadjordjeva and Ella got the Ground Beef Burek.

The Karadjordjeva is a pan seared S\schnitzel rolled with ham, kajmak, skillet potatoes and topped with tartar sauce. To say it was delicious would be an understatement… it was authentically Serbian and left Ella with plate envy. The Ground Beef Burek came with house made fillo dough, ground beef and onions served with a side salad with balsamic glaze. This was incredibly filling, thick and heavy.. tasty… but very heavy. I’ve never had Serbian food so for all I know it was cooked perfectly… but with that said, it needed something else. Some sauce or cream to top it off maybe.. or even some potatoes and veggies in with the onions and beef.

Both dishes were great, the Karadjordjeva was the best though. If you’re in the area and looking for something outside the norm, you should check out Intermezzo Pizzeria and Cafe.

Central Grocery

I just couldnt pass up eating at the place that invented the muffaletta on my vacation to New Orleans. The sandwich is huge so for anybody trying it for the first time… get a half for yourself or split the whole. I would throw on a tomato and some lettuce if I invented it… but other than that it was yummy :)

Irene’s Cuisine

Wrapping up my first day in new orleans I found myself at Irene’s Cuisine for dinner. We had reservations so we were seated quickly and the staff was very friendly.

The night began with a complimentary serving of bruschetta which tasted delicious. A loaf of fresh baked bread came out next and it was so delicious I wanted a loaf all to myself . I ordered the cannelloni and topped it with a mountain of tableside grated parmesan cheese. The cannelloni ended up being one of the favorite plates on the table. I had the opportunity to also try the osso buco and lamb shanks, both of which were delicious. I got the creole cream cheese cake for dessert and loved every bite.

Irenes was the perfect way to end my first day in New Orleans and can easily see why it is in the top ten.

Ilios Noche

I hated Ilios Noche. Ive been once and would only ever go once. I took Ella there for her birthday and was more than disappointed. Before going I made sure to call and make a reservation and inform them it was my girlfriends birthday. When we arrived we got our table right away and thought we were in for a great night.

Our waitress gave us our menus and took our order. I ordered the lamb burger and my girlfriend ordered the braised lamb shank. Thats when it all went down hill… there was no starter given to you while you waited, some bread and butter would have been nice… the food took forever to arrive and immediately I noticed the lack of attention given to my girlfriends plate. When paying almost thirty dollars for food I expect it to look as good as it taste but it didnt. It was a plate of orzo rice with a uninspired blob of lamb plopped in the middle of it.. my burger tasted awful and I felt myself wishing I was at Firebirds.

We both spent the night with empty drinks bc after the food was delivered we didnt see our waitress till she dropped off the check (which we didnt ask for).. with it being my girlfriends birthday we had planned on sampling something off the dessert menu but when the check arrived without the waitress asking if we were done, we decided we should just leave. I was hoping since I called before and made note that It was our first time going and it was for my girlfriends birthday maybe they would take extra care to ensure us a good time.

Unfortunately they didnt,… the food sucked… the staff sucked… and the prices were awful. I will never go back and will make sure I tell everyone I can to stay away from this place.

Update… After writing this review I went ahead and forwarded it to Ilios Noche to give them a chance to reconcile my experience, several weeks later I still have received no response.

A Taste of Italy

A Taste of Italy is a great little family run restaurant. The service is always friendly and the food is as authentic Italian as it gets. We have a few favorites: The hot Italian sub, Chicken Fontina, Lasagna, and the Carbanara, but everything i have ever tried here is delicious and made with love. A taste of Italy is one of my very favorite restaurants in Richmond and one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever had the chance to dine at,
