Care to guess who was the first to post a review for the Mellow Mushroom in Ballantyne aka the hottest pizza joint in south Charlotte that’s not even open yet???? It wasn’t Creative Loafing or the Charlotte Observer… it was URBANFOODLIFE!!!!!! We got access to the pre-Grand Opening event and it was freaking awesome. We got there at 6:30 and the place was already packed with googlie eyed patrons looking to get their fix and after a 15 minute wait we we’re seated and the real fun began :)
We we’re seated in the second level seating area over-looking the restaurant but since there were only two of us.. we didn’t get to sit at the super amazing touchscreen tables :(
These tables we’re stupidly awesome. They had music videos, games, free-hand art, etc.. After a couple of minutes we met our waitress “Corrie” and she was super amazing. Probably the best waitress we have ever had and the next time we go we will only sit in her section. She had just the right amount of wit and attitude to deal with us for two hours, she was quick with the come-backs, totally personable, very friendly and no matter what she’s getting paid… its definitely not enough. We might very well start a new section of the site and start listing our favorite waiters and waitress’s just because of how awesome she was.
Anyway, lets start talking about the food. We started the night out with some bruschetta served unlike any other. It came out toasted and topped with diced tomatoes, basil and feta cheese with an addictive balsamic vinegar and olive oil sauce drizzled over top. We’ve had a lot of bruschetta throughout the Queen City and can honestly say this was one of the best we have ever had… sorry Mama Ricotta’s.
After the mouthwatering bruschetta we dove into what Mellow Mushroom does best, PIZZA!!! We ordered the Funky Q Chicken pizza and the Red Skin Potato pie. The crust was unusually exceptional and both pizzas were so great they might very well take the top spot on our Foodies Favorites list.
The Funky Q Chicken pizza came with bbq chicken, mozzarella, cheddar cheese, caramalized onions, applewood smoke bacon, bbq sauce and then I topped it off with some much needed pineapple. I’ve had this type of pizza several times before and this one held its own to the competition.
The unexpected favorite of the night was the Red Skin Potato pie. It came with an olive oil and garlic base topped with red potatoes, applewood smoke bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, chives and a sour cream / spicy ranch sauce drizzled over top. From the first bite I fell in love with this pizza. It was like biting into a fully loaded baked potato.. but even better!!!
Mellow Mushroom might very well have the best pizza in Charlotte.. but you’re probably going to have to go to find out for yourself. The crust is addictive, the pizzas were amazing, the bruschetta was original and our waitress was the best ever. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience and will be making this a regular hangout. A special thank you goes out to Mellow Mushroom for the opportunity to check out the new location and we hope they have huge success in Ballantyne.
