Firebirds Wood Fired Grill at Stonecrest

Continuing with the theme of eating out on a budget… we find ourselves at Firebirds Wood Fired Grill at Stonecrest tonight. When you’re young and broke (like us) you find yourself searching for every penny saving deal there is to maximize on the amount of things you can do. From 4-7 on weekdays at the bar, Firebirds Wood Fired Grill at Stonecrest offers half priced appitizers and we decided to take them up on that offer :)

We arrived just seconds before the sky opened up and it seemed like an ocean was falling down in the parking lot so we took our sweet time ordering and eating as to prolong the inevitable dash to the car once we had to leave. After a long look at the 7 item bar menu… we went with the bbq sliders, the chicken wings, ranch onion rings and the coconut shrimp (which isn’t on the half off menu but Ella wanted it, so we got it).

As most restaurants do.. Firebirds started off the evening with a small loaf of fresh baked bread and butter, which is always baked so hard that a steak knife can barely cut through the crust. If you can manage to cut through the crust without squishing the bread to the size of a tortilla, you’ll find it to taste like…. bread. Nothing amazing, nothing memorable… just fresh baked bread in all of its normal glory.

It was only a few minutes later that we got our plates and really started to dig in and see what these half priced apps were all about.

The ranch onion rings were piled high like a fried skyscraper but we quickly went Godzilla on it and torn them to nothingness. They were thin sliced and thick fried with an unidentifiable background seasoning that was both addictively delicious but curiously confusing.

The bbq sliders we’re topped in the same bbq sauce as the chicken wings (which is a good thing) and they were served with palm sized fresh baked buns with cole slaw and pulled pork. To say this was our favorite plate of the night would be an undertatement.

The chicken wings came in two flavors.. hot or bbq. Hot food is never hot enough for me (Curtis) so I always get the other option when available because I end up disappointed. The bbq chicken wings were thick coated with a sweet and scrumptious bbq sauce, baked to a crisp and came about 10 to the bowl.. which makes them about $.50 a wing!!!

The coconut shrimp came with a tortilla slaw and was delicious. The shrimp were nicely cooked and the coconut added a nice crunch as well as a little sweetness. The slaw had lots of fresh lime juice that balanced the shrimp perfectly. The added tortillas added just the right amount of crispy texture to make this dish a favorite.

We’re pretty much broke on a regular basis, so eating cheap is a must. Firebirds half priced apps allow us to still go out and enjoy the finer things in life and not cringe when we see the bill :)
