Before heading straight to Washington DC and hitting up Chipotle’s Asian inspired new restaurant concept ShopHouse we decided it was appropriate to get an authentic bahn mi at Banh Mi Saigon Sandwiches & Bakery. ShopHouse had originally opened its doors with a menu of rice bowls and bahn mi sandwiches but for some reason was never able to get the bread to meet their high standards so they ditched the bahn mi and strengthened their focus on the bowls. After hearing that ShopHouse ditched the bahn mi sandwich I was left with a bahn mi hole in my belly that only Banh Mi Saigon Sandwiches & Bakery could fill.
We dropped in for a couple minutes on our way to DC and got a bahn mi saigon on a 10″ fresh made french baguette with pork, pickled carrots, cucumbers, mayo, cilantro, and jalapeño. The sandwich was easily the best bahn mi I had ever eaten (also the first) and only made me wish I had been able to get to ShopHouse sooner to try their version of the traditional Vietnamese sandwich before cutting it off the menu.
Banh Mi Saigon Sandwiches & Bakery was a quick stop for us on our way to DC and from what we could tell it was on point and the bahn mi was as authentic as it gets outside of Vietnam.
