I have been to Azteca plenty of times in the past, but not since I started documenting my hunt for Charlotte’s best Mexican food. I figured in order to properly write a review I should go and write about a fresh experience, so off to Azteca I went.
The decor is a little much for me, everything is overly decorated to let you know you’re in a Mexican restaurant including the outfits the staff has to wear. With that being said, the food was amazing and the service was on point. I ordered the Carnitas de Puerco for dinner and the fried cheesecake for dessert.
The carnitas came out on a HUGE plate with a full spread of rice, beans, guacomole, sour cream, lettuce, red onions, slaw and a veggie mix. The plate was easily big enough for my girlfriend and I to share and we still had some leftovers. Everything on the plate was about standard except the carnitas themselves. The meat was above average and I can easily say the Best in Charlotte. On my plate they used a combination of white meat and dark, with dark being the show stopper. Perfectly prepared, full of moisture and flavor just ready to put a smile on my face :) The fried cheesecake was equally as delightful, it came cinnamon coated and served with vanilla and chocolate ice cream. If it werent for the pineapple empanadas at Cantina 1511, this would have been my favorite dessert at a Mexican restaurant. At the end of the whole meal they even gave us sopapilla’s compliments of the house which was a perfect ending to our dinner.
If you’re in the area and looking for amazing carnitas, I highly recommend you check out Azteca!
